PROMOTING SMART SECURITY PLATFORM

For more than a year since Physicians for Social Responsibility and others have promulgated the SMART SECURITY PLATFORM, it has been promoted nationally by endorsement of many organizations, and locally in the Pittsburgh area by presentations to civic groups and by petitions. This is consonant with Congressman John Murtha's recent declaration that the United States should "......terminate the deployment of U.S. forces in Iraq.." and "....pursue security and stability in Iraq through diplomacy."

The basic ideas encompassed by the SMART SECURITY PLATFORM are:
  1. Strengthening International Institutions and the Rule of Law to Prevent Acts of Terrorism and Future Wars.
  2. Reducing the Threat and Stopping the Spread of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction.
  3. Changing Budget Priorities to Reflect Real Security Needs.

Adoption and implementation of these ideas by any present or future U.S. Congress and Administration will make us safer from the dangers of terrorism. Please contact us if you want to help or learn more about this campaign.

With no plausible enemy after the Cold War, the U.S. Administration's Pentagon budget is $441 billion for 2006 ------ more than all other nations combined, more than the Cold War annual average, and more than four times greater than the combined budgets of all potential enemies combined -- Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.

-- despite no successful realistic interception test since its beginnings in the 1960s, and the expert scientific opinion that a successful ballistic missile defense (BMD) cannot be produced, the United States has spent more than $150 billion since inception, and the present administration has installed a so-called BMD sytem in Alaska costing $10-11 annually.
