Presentations of Slide Show-Talk: "Abolition of Nuclear Weapons: The
Time is Now"
"Abolition of Nuclear Weapons: The Time
is Now" is an educational and action-oriented presentation by
knowledgeable health professionals, illustrated with slides, that
provides a unique perspective on the medical, environmental, and human
effects of nuclear weapons, including the consequences of possible
nuclear detonations in Pittsburgh. It highlights the urgency of the new
and growing dangers present after the cold war and the 9/11 terrorist
attack -- the huge arsenals, accidental war, terrorism and
proliferation. It suggests concrete steps to reduce the dangers and to
ultimately achieve nuclear abolition, as advocated by leading military,
political, security and medical authorities.
Upon request, presentations are given as
a public service to interested groups. Suitable audiences include the
general public, physicians and other health professionals, business,
labor and professional groups, high school and college students. The
program format, duration (10-40 minutes) and focus can be adapted to
address current events, specific issues and the special needs of a
variety of audiences.

Annual Film Festival: Nuclear
Sundays and Visions of War
Since
the Spring of 2001, PSR-Pittsburgh and The Pittsburgh Filmmakers have
jointly sponsored a Film Festival dealing with the potential of human
extinction in the nuclear age. Landmark films followed by discussions
educate, provoke and activate, while entertaining. They will inform
younger people of nuclear perspectives during the Cold War and the need
to oppose the current dangers of war and military nuclearism. Each of
the films has projected different cinematic approaches. Past programs
have featured classic films directed by Stanley Kubrick, Akira
Kurosawa, Sidney Lumet, Stanley Kramer, and Emile de Antonio.
Media
Project
Aimed to promote use of the communications media in the local region to
the greatest degree possible to promote the goals and strategies of
PSR-Pittsburgh. This has been an effective means to reach large
segments of the general public and political community. Specifically,
it is intended to increase visibility, awareness and salience of
issues; place issues on the "public agenda"; educate and persuade
opinion leaders and elected officials; and increase credibility and
authority of PSR as an expert resource and advocate.
This has produced a variety of offerings
to newspapers, radio, television and the Internet, such as
letters-to-the editor, op-eds, press releases, paid spot ads, public
service announcements, talk show call-ins, participation in panels and
listserves.
Action Alerts
Periodically, as determined by current
events, local activities, or urgent needs to influence our elected
representatives in the U.S. Congress or the Administration, PSR
disseminates "action alerts" to members and friends to keep them
informed and provide opportunities for participation and action in
pursuit of PSR goals.
Meetings with Political Leaders,
Policy makers and Elected Officials
PSR-Pittsburgh arranges or joins
delegations of members and local citizens, on an ad hoc basis, to
inform and influence decision-makers and elected officials in the U.S.
government on important PSR positions. These provide effective and
empowering experiences for PSR members and other citizens from the
Pittsburgh area to project and document public concern. Members and
supporters of PSR objectives are encouraged to participate.
