The
traditions and role of medicine give physicians and PSR a unique
and powerful voice, when human health and survival are in jeopardy.
No other profession is so explicitly dedicated to amelioration
of suffering, prevention of illness and combat of needless loss
of life. Its scientific expertise, objectivity, pedagogic skills,
analytic training, and experience in articulating complex matters
give it special credibility, respect and authority. Medicine's
recognition of universal human value and vulnerability, international
vision and common language give its voice a wide reach across
national borders and divisions. Such qualities give physicians
an extraordinary ability to mobilize the public will. Whether
in their own communities, across the nation or across international
boundaries in many countries simultaneously, physicians have
the power to educate, influence, rally and coordinate efforts
of local citizens and coalitions, political leaders and decision
makers.
PSR
enjoys wide recognition, prestige and respect, because of
its long record of public service and commitment to the use
of medicine's scientific and moral authority in support of
nuclear war prevention and war opposition in the U.S. and
worldwide.
Here
in the Pittsburgh area, active member contacts with the public,
with leaders and with decision makers can have a unique and
major local influence.
